In 1871, two lighthouses were built, aligned to mark the entrance to the harbour: the square tower at Croas Malo and the small square lighthouse at the tip, which was deemed too small and replaced by a second 7.20 m round lighthouse at the end of the enclosure. It was completed in 1902, and the first lighthouse was mothballed. The lighthouse keeper lived in the large rectangular tower at Croas Malo.
