Papa Poydenot, the name given to the first lifeboat in Saint-Pierre en Penmarc'h, at the request of Madame Caroline Poydenot, a donor who financed its construction in 1900 as a tribute to her husband Jean Bernard Paul Poydenot, who died in 1890.
The Papa Poydenot, which was classified as a historic monument in 1992, still sails as a reminder of the days of lifeboats and sailing.
It is a teak lifeboat, with sails and oars. Unsinkable, it is self-righting and self-draining. It belongs to the Papa Poydenot association, whose main aim is to preserve the memory of the crews of sailing and rowing lifeboats.
It can be seen in a room at the tip of Penmarc'h, in St Pierre, behind the Eckmühl lighthouse.
There is also an exhibition of black and white photos on the history of sea rescue, its organisation in Penmarc'h, the work of the brave Penmarc'hais lifeguards and the development of lifeboats.
Open to the public from the Easter holidays until the end of September.
