Gourlizon

Looking for peace and quiet? Located 20 minutes from Quimper and 30 minutes from Audierne, close to the Bay of Douarnenez, Gourlizon is a haven for nature lovers.

Getting there

Trails and valleys

Surrounded by countryside as far as the eye can see, Gourlizon will be the destination of choice for lovers of peace and nature. Its central location, on the edge of the Pays Bigouden and the Pays de Douarnenez, halfway between Quimper and the sea, is also an asset for those wishing to explore further afield during their holidays in Cornouaille.

The Goyen and Pouldavid rivers flow through the commune.

It is also one of the few places in the Bigouden region where the valleys replace the flat expanses, offering a little relief with some unobstructed views.

In the village, the mural illuminates the area with its plant motifs and creates a little extra greenery around the church of Saint-Cornely.

The must-haves

The large mural painted on the gable of one of the houses in the village adds another touch of greenery near the church.

About ten metres high, this monumental work was created bypainter Lutina Pensard in 2018.

The work took 5 weeks to complete, and the result is unanimously acclaimed.

There was already a church here as early as the 11th century, when Binidic, Bishop and Count of Cornouaille, donated part of it to the Locmaria Abbey in Quimper.

Dating from the 16th century and enlarged at the end of the 17th century, the current church comprises a nave with five-bay aisles and a choir: there is no transept. The bell tower has no gallery. The porch dates from the early 16th century. The sacristy bears the inscription “M. G. P. R.” and on the north side “Jac. Joncour. Fab. 1685” . There are statues of Saint Cornely as a pope (17th century), Saint Tugdual as a bishop (17th century), the Virgin Mother and a Crucifix.

Discover the countryside around the village on the trail starting from the church car park (approx. 1 hour). This short walk is suitable for families. Leaving from the village of Gourlizon.
