European Ecolabel

Created in 1992, the European Ecolabel is the only official European eco-label that can be used in all member countries of the European Union.
It distinguishes environmentally-friendly tourist accommodation such as hotels, gîtes, bed and breakfasts, campsites, hotel residences and rental accommodation.
The European Ecolabel criteria are divided into 5 categories: general management, energy, water, waste and wastewater, and other criteria.

The criteria require :

    • The implementation of a waste management system
    • Equipment with low energy consumption,
    • Equipment with low water consumption,
    • Use of eco-labelled household products,
    • The promotion of soft mobility,
    • At least 50% of the electricity consumed must be of renewable origin,
    • A ban on the use of pesticides for the upkeep of outdoor green spaces.

Green Key Label

Developed in France since 1998, the Clef Verte label is the first ecolabel for tourist establishments in France. Also present on five continents, it is the first international sustainable tourism label. Holidaymakers can choose to reduce their environmental impact by selecting one of the many establishments with the label in France.

The criteria are established at international level and are common to all countries. They are re-evaluated every year to meet the environmental requirements of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).
They cover different areas such as

    • School environmental policy: water, energy and waste management,
    • Responsible purchasing,
    • the living environment
    • Environmental awareness.

Ecogîte label

Being an “Ecogîte” necessarily implies having the Gîtes de France label. The Ecogîte label was created by Gîtes de France to promote the homes of owners who care about the environment.

To qualify for this label, you need to meet broadly the same criteria as for the Ecolabel.
As well as reducing your energy consumption (electric heating is prohibited), water consumption (rainwater harvesting), your energy production and your energy use, you must also reduce your energy consumption. In addition to reducing your energy consumption (no electric heating), water consumption (rainwater harvesting) and waste production (composting), it is very important that your guest house blends in with its surroundings. In fact, Ecogîtes wants the architecture of your home to be “respectful of the shapes, proportions, materials and colours” of the area in which you live. As well as using local materials for the construction or renovation of your gîte or guest room, you should also think about your land, if you have one.Planting local species in your garden that require little water is a criterion to take into account if you want to be awarded the Ecogîtes label.
