Life was very hard for the female workers in the Douarnenez canneries at the start of the 20th century. Among them, Joséphine worked hard at the factory. But the lives of all these “Penn Sardin” were to change when they rose up together against their harsh working conditions. A historical novel, inspired by the life of Joséphine Pencalet, one of the first women in France to be elected as a local councillor.
Tinaïg Maugard wrote this story to highlight the women who have shaped the history of Brittany. She is a student of the Breton language at the University of Rennes 2 and this is her first novel. She enjoys spending time chatting in Breton with the older generation in the Bigouden region, where her grandparents live. Her sister, Maïlis, has illustrated the book.
