NoBorder, an unclassifiable and dynamic festival, has been exploring developments in popular and traditional music from around the world since 2011. It aims to reflect the vitality and diversity of a musical landscape shaped by heritage, cross-cultural influences and contemporary reinventions. L’Avel-Dro welcomes Garenne and Eris as part of the NoBorder tour and invites Gregailh to share the bill.
Gregailh: A post-traditional dance music group, Gregailh burst onto the scene in 2024. The Rennes-based duo – featuring a hurdy-gurdy (Adrien Llave) and percussion (Jean-Félix Hautbois) – reinterprets traditional Breton music through the lens of noise, drone and repetitive music. Gregailh blends electronics with experimental instrument-making: the hurdy-gurdy is enhanced with effects and distortion, whilst the drum features low-pitched strings and metal elements. The duo thus presents this new music at the experimental crossroads of dance music and underground genres.
ERIS: a trio from Rennes, led by the ethereal voice of Mannaïg Le Guével, takes the bold step of fusing traditional influences from Upper Brittany with the power of contemporary amplified music. They harmonise personalities and instruments to create a mystical musical experience that transcends genres and differences.
Garenne: Clémence Cognet and Noëllie Nioulou are steeped in Baroque music just as they are in the folk violin music of the Massif Central. Their strong bond, forged over years of playing at dances, results in lively yet subtle music with a deep, rich sound.
Concerts scheduled as part of the ‘Hors Les Murs’ programme at the NoBorder Festival #16, in partnership with Le Quartz and Bretagne(s) World Sounds.
