Description
Uncover the secrets of the chapel with a SPREV guide.
Set in an exceptional location overlooking Audierne Bay, the Penhors Chapel, founded in the 13th century, takes its name from its natural surroundings: it stands not far from a small pond, hence its name (pen: head and hors: reed). It features a small triumphal arch and a calvary. Inside, the piers separating the side aisle from the nave are in the Pont-Croix style. The bell tower stands in the centre of the chapel, where the Romanesque section once ended. The vaults are panelled.
It is one of the major pilgrimage sites in the Bigouden region; the ‘pardon’ takes place in early September. Pierre-Jakez Hélias writes in *Le Cheval d’orgueil*: ‘Its great “pardon” is the highlight of our lives. It is also our pride, for it draws such a crowd of strangers to our region that our Virgin must surely be one of the most powerful among the ladies of Heaven.”
