Its function was to monitor the coast and inform sailors of the weather. The first semaphore was built in 1804 and commissioned in 1806. Until 1920, it was the only building in the commune to receive telephone and telegraph services. In 1930, a concrete sea wall was built to test the speed of military and merchant ships. From 1939 to 1945, the German army took possession of the site. Shortly after the war, the Semaphore ceased all activity. It became an exhibition centre.
