Pouldreuzic

In the heart of Audierne Bay, Pouldreuzic, named after the famous author Pierre-Jakez Hélias, combines nautical pleasures with cultural discoveries.

Getting there

Surfing and museums

With just over 2,000 inhabitants, Pouldreuzic is one of Brittany’ s best-kept secrets, less than 30 minutes from Quimper.

The surf spot at Penhors, which has been awarded the “Ville de Surf” label, is a little more private than the legendary spot at La Torche, just a few kilometres away, but is ideal for learning to surf and bodyboard thanks to its gentler waves. Surfing takes place in a protected environment, as Penhors is one of only 10 beaches in Finistère to be awarded the Blue Flag. Pouldreuzic has been awarded the “Ville de Surf” label.

On the cultural front, Pouldreuzic was the birthplace of writer and radio broadcaster Pierre Jakez Hélias, whose works include “Cheval d’orgueil”. A museum is dedicated to him, within the walls of the small house where he grew up. There are also four other museums worth visiting in Pouldreuzic: the Musée de l’Amiral, the Espace Kerné, the Hangar du Patrimoine and the Musée de la Maison Hénaff.

Gastronomy fans will no doubt know Pouldreuzic for its little blue box, the Pâté Hénaff. This is where the famous tinned food that travels the world is still made!

The must-haves

The little port of Penhors is a real lively place, with a number of seaside restaurants and bars.

In Penhors, you can take a surfing lesson, try out a sand yacht outing, enjoy a dip in the sea before enjoying a drink in the setting sun. It’s also here that you can discover thousands of shells at the Musée de l’Amiral.

The spectacle, which can be seen from the accessible footpath, can vary radically depending on the season. In winter, when the swell is high and yachtsmen stay ashore, the dykes unleash an explosion of spray as the sea bumps against them.

On the starboard breakwater, a mosaic eye keeps watch over the sailors. This is one of the Yeux d’Iroise created by the artist Pierre Chanteau, of which there are around fifteen in the Bigouden region.

To live the Hénaff experience is to discover a shop full of emblematic and delicious products, but it is also to embark on a journey to the past, to discover this company steeped in history.

The Hénaff shop welcomes you all year round, with a wide choice of products ranging from the traditional blue box of pâté to a variety of recent culinary creations.

The Maison Hénaff Museum opens its doors in July and August on the farm belonging to Jean Hénaff, founder of the brand. Documents, tools, films, photos and testimonials carefully preserved since 1907 will be on display.

Kerné is the oldest cider mill in Finistère. For 3 generations, the Bosser family has worked passionately to produce this traditional cider from the surrounding orchards.

The apples come from the south of Finistère (Pays Bigouden, Douarnenez, Quimper, Fouesnant, La Forêt-Fouesnant and Clohars-Carnoët).

The Kerné shop offers a wide choice of ciders and apple-related products. There is also a museum area with events for all ages.

This typical Pays Bigouden house in the market town of Pouldreuzic was the birthplace of the writer Pierre-Jakez Hélias .

Inside, you’ll find a living room dating from the early 20th century and a museum dedicated to the life and work of the author of Cheval d’orgueil.

The On the Footsteps of the Cheval d’orgueil interpretation trail starts at the town hall and continues for 6 km through the surrounding countryside. The trail takes you to a number of places that are emblematic of the novel in which the author recalls his childhood between the wars.

More than 14,000 shells from around the world and 200 seabirds from our coasts are on display in this modern, interactive museum.

Don’t miss the astonishing fossils, the brilliantly coloured minerals, the starfish, the corals, the sharks… Interactive kiosk, film and video projections, educational booklets for children.
To appreciate the richness of the collections, allow 1 hour for your visit. You’ll also find a shop selling local produce, and a garden overlooking Audierne Bay with games for children.
500 m2 of fabulous discoveries!

A land of producers

There are many designers, local producers and craftspeople keeping the local economy alive. The Patrick Robinet chocolate factory produces and sells its chocolates in the town centre. Esprit Safran et Compagnie works the Bigouden soil to grow saffron, aloe vera, aloe arborescens and turmeric plants. The plants and by-products are sold via short distribution channels and the online shop.

Still in Pouldreuzic, where the conditions for entrepreneurship seem particularly attractive, Gaëlle Besse has set up her laboratory to produce natural soaps and other quality cosmetics.

All these local producers join Kerné and Hénaff, two of the town’s leading companies.

A map of local producers in the Haut Pays Bigouden is available from our tourist offices.
