The AKVA Coastal Rescue Association is a sports and educational organisation founded in May 2015 by former lifeguards.
Its aim is to promote coastal rescue and to train the public in water-based activities and first aid.
It caters to a wide audience, from children to adults, and offers activities all year round, both at sea and in the pool.
Training sessions take place mainly in the Pont-l’Abbé area, on the beaches of the Pays Bigouden and at the Aquasud swimming pool.
The principle of coastal lifesaving is based on a simple idea: learning to swim, to save oneself and to save others, whilst developing an understanding of the marine environment and a spirit of mutual aid.
Several disciplines are covered:
- first aid - competitive lifesaving
- first aid training courses
- the BNSSA (National Certificate in Lifesaving at Sea) – the benchmark qualification for supervising swimming pools and bathing areas and responding to emergencies in the water.
- swimming lessons for all ages
As they progress through the course, learners can practise in a variety of conditions.
The long-term aim is to be able to practise on all types of water bodies (calm, windy, with waves, etc.).
Lifesaving is an activity that combines individual qualities (physical abilities and knowledge of the ocean) with the collective values of solidarity and cohesion, which are essential for ensuring everyone’s safety.
